Babe Laufenberg, Dallas Cowboys radio color analyst and former NFL quarterback, answered questions about the team during a live chat Tuesday. Here are the highlights:
Q: Think the Cowboys end up spending more money on their own free agents, or those from the outside?
Laufenberg: “Free agency as we know it came into existence in 1993, and teams rushed to sign the biggest names. That didn’t really work for most teams (for one team that it did work, see Green Bay, ‘White, Reggie’). You don’t see the best players ever hitting free agency because their own teams lock them up to deals. No top-flight QB has ever hit free agency while in their prime. Zero. I would be judicious in my use of free agency, much the same way the Cowboys have. Use it to fill out your roster with mid-level players. Sign your own players to the big-money deals.”
